The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially kicked off with a dramatic opening night as Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The hosts wasted no time making their mark, with Julián Quiñones scoring the tournament’s opening goal after capitalising on a defensive error. Mexico carried the advantage into halftime before Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead in the second half, scoring his first-ever World Cup goal on his fifth appearance at the tournament.

The match quickly turned into a chaotic affair, with three red cards shown throughout the contest. South Africa were reduced to nine players after dismissals for Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, while Mexico’s César Montes was also sent off late in the game.

Beyond the action on the pitch, the opening ceremony delivered a celebration of culture and music, featuring performances from global stars including Shakira, Burna Boy, Tyla, David Guetta, and Megan Thee Stallion.

With the opening victory secured, Mexico begin their World Cup campaign on a high, while South Africa face a difficult road ahead after a turbulent start to the tournament.
